i own a crosman nitro venom with a centerpoint 4-16x 40 adventure class scope. i mounted it very securely using loctite blue on all screws. anyway, last time i was breaking my barrel, it had slipped out of my hands right before locking up the piston and it banged back into place with a good amount of shock. ever since, my scope has been out of zero, and by a lot. it was previously zeroed in at 17 and 35 yards, and i couldnt get it to hit the paper from 17 yards again. it would shoot about a foot or more higher than it used to. i even used up all of the elevation dial and its still way off.

my question is, how could such shock throw it off so much? im thinking something happened internally within the scope. is there a way to reset my zero?

could i possibly do so by loosening the allen screw on top?

what should i do?

Before blaming the scope- look over your mounting setup- it is quite possible you have bent a mount as opposed to 'breaking' the scope. This may be able to be overcome by shimming a ring, or replacing the mount.

I had read somewhere that if the barrel snaps up like that (or pulling the trigger while the gun is broken open) it can get slightly bent. Don't know if there is any truth to that or not.

That exact same thign happened to me. I could not get my Big Cat to shoot straight at all. I then bought myself a Nitro Venom, and mounted the same socpe onto the Nitro Venom, and it shot fine.

To sum it up, it might be your air rifle. Embarassed

First step- take the scope off and use open sights to see if you can hit anything.

Next, check out the mounts on the scope and if you have an extra set laying around- put them on and see if anything changes.

If you do not have other rings and the issue is always the same (i.e. always shooting too far in one direction- shim the mounts and see if you can correct the problem.

I think you bent your barrel upwards. I have seen this happen personally and the best bet you've got is to shim the front of the scope up a lot to correct for it. It might be bent to far to shim it up. It all depends on how far it's bent. Either way it will be a pain to correct for.

It does sound like a bent barrel, which means either shimming the scope or bending the barrel.

haha oh shitt... not what i wanted to hear. im gonna mount my scope on my buddy's 392 and make sure its the gun and not the scope. what you guys said does make a lot of sense. i couldnt tell if it was bent just from looking at it, but i'll try swapping scopes and confirm this, if it may be the case.

thanks

I would think with a boresighter tool you could verify/correct your scope misalignment. Can you borrow one from somebody?
