after watching "a christmas story" and hearing about the red ryder, i was pretty much convinced it was nothing serious. so when i asked for a bb gun for christmas one year, and opened the red ryder box, my expression couldn't have been one worth an xmas morning pic. i was actually kinda pissed! lol but after taking it out in the yard i started to really enjoy it. and then over the next few years grew really attatched to it.

that gun saw some serious abuse, and kept truckin strong for years. why it finally broke is still a mystery, i wasn't as good at taking things apart and putting them back together at the time. but i kinda do want another one even though i'm now 23. and you can bet any kids of mine will have this be their first gun when the time comes.

people underestimate this gun, i shot a bird maybe about 20-30 yards up in a tree (approximate, it was a while ago) and though it didn't die, its wing got broken from the impact making it tumble all the way down.

So glad I found this forum!
My 7 1/2 yr old son, whos now becoming active in cub scouts is asking for a bb gun for christmas. I think its fine, as long as I'm with him when he's using it.. That said, I'm kinda torn between the red ryder and the Crosman pumpmaster 760... Or maybe the Crossman Recruit, but I think that may be a little much for him.. Maybe I also should mention this will strictly be a supervised activity. And when I'm not with him, it will be locked up..

My biggest concern is WILL he be able to cock a red ryder? And is it accurate? I've read many reviews saying the red ryder isn't accurate.. And I'd hate for him to get turned off from the fun of a bb gun because of it's accuracy..

Anyway, any info/insight is greatly appreciated.. And maybe there's a sub $60 starter gun I've overlooked. if so, let me know. Thanks much & Have a great day. Smile

my 8 year old can do it, but he is 4'4 and a football player. He weighs in at about 120. So keep that in mind, but red ryders are pretty easy to cock.

One thing I don/t like about multi pump guns is most of them are smoothbore plus to get one good shot, it's at least 6 stroke which is in my opinion too much work for not enough shooting.
