Hello. Interesting site you have here.
I own 2 guns- a 2240 and a NIghtstalker, but have never modified them. What tools I might need if I were to start trying to improve them a bit? And, what can I expect to get out of these guns? The Nightstalker seems week but the 2240 seems ok- not super powerful but beause its a handgun I figured this is the way its supposed to be. Can I use regular handyman tools to work on most airguns or are there a lot of specialised tools required for different guns? This might influence what my next air gun purchase is.
Thanx in advance for the help |

Based on my experience, most newer airguns can be taken apart and reassembled with fairly common tools- i.e. screwdrivers, snap-ring pliers, needle-nose pliers and such. But- from what I've seen, alot of older guns would have nuts and such with cut-outs requiring more specilized tools- the pieces could still be disassembled using regular tools- but marks, scarring or damage could result.
Springers- or spring-piston guns, even "modern" ones tend to need more specialised tools- i.e. spring compression devices and the like (see yietspingle's posts in the 'rifles" forum under the Beeman 1040 topic as an example).
I'm no 'mod expert'- so this is only what I've gathered and experienced- I'm sure others have more specific information depending on the gun or guns in question.
As for your NightStalker seeming a bit "weak"- apparently screwing in the airsource tube can cause the gun's valve tube assembly to rotate (it's only held in place by a couple of set-screws) and when it rotates it allows for some Co2 leakage- so that may be something to look at.
The 2240 situation- look around here at what other people have done and/or recommended as a starting point. |

you have to make sure the valve don't turn on you, drill out the side of the valve where they are suppose to be seated .. that will help the set screws to hold it better and a longer barrel ..I put a 1077 barrel on mine, gives the barrel an extra 4" ..which will help with it being a 177 cal. CO2, in order to do that .. you need to get it machined .. no can do with simple tools .. least I wouldn't want to try ..
With the 2240 .. there alot you can do .. all kinds of info on it .. the crosman forum has that covered from crown to butt ..
Good luck

Thanks for the info guys. So for now I guess I'm OK with just my regular tools (may have to get snapring pliers though)- but maybe have to avoid the antique guns. LOL
Taking apart the Nightstalker to check for this valve-tube rotating sounds like an idea: will it be obvious? What should I be looking for? As for changing the barrel and needing it machined that probably won't happen anytime soon. Do you have any pictures of yours gunrunner? Not too sure I understand how you did this.
Thanks again- and CYA later. Larry |

I recently bought a 2240. Seeing so many modifcations on all the forums, looked like a neat pistol to test different mods and see the results.
I am going to (as i have time) post all the mods I perform to the pistol along with the result. I have a Chrony so will see what it takes to get consistent FPS (under 500).
Hopefully this week start with steel breech and then try different springs. Eventually want to convert to PCP and larger bore.
Good luck with your mods. Search the Crosman forum for great modification ideas. |

Here's some stuff on the valve tube mod, from the Crosman site, pictures/mods were done by "Calvin":
The valve with setscrew installed before mod:
Those lines to the side of the screw were caused by the screw itself when the valve was turned by the AS bottle being tightened. The idea is to drill the setscrew hole 1/4" deeper using a 5/32" drill bit and tighten the screws in all the way to make sure the valve can't move again and cause leaks.
